The project is about a systematic design of the control hardware/software to connect buildings to a low temperature grid with seasonal thermal storage in the underground (ATES). All buildings act as a prosumer in such a network. The stable and robust integration of prosumers in such a network is a key challenge for future CO2-low heating/cooling grids. The university campus in Utrecht, which is operating such a network, serves as a demonstration site.

SolteQ Energy has developed FreshWaterMill, a hydraulic windmill that efficiently converts wind energy into high pressure. This high pressure is used to drive a reverse osmosis desalination installation. Excess energy, that the reverse osmosis cannot use, is converted into electricity. So there is no grid connection necessary, but the system can, if applicable, connected to the grid system.
