The Dutch windmill

The owner of a windmill in Nieuw-Lekkerland wants to re-design the interior mechanics of an old wind mill. The site has been granted a heritage site status and a subsidy to refurbish the windmill to produce power. The intention is to showcase the features of old Dutch windmills, while at the same time utilize the structure to generate power.

The projectteam is in search for some extra help, apply now! Click here for detailed information on the vacancy.

The interior has been modified in the past and now contains a large electric motor, which is used to drive the milling equipment. The owner wants to re-install the wind blades on this classic mill and use it to either 1) drive an electric generator, or 2) feed the mechanical energy into the existing electric motor. The design choices are limited to the above two as the team can suggest economically and structurally feasible innovative options. The challenge will be that the interior has been changed quite substantially, meaning there is less space for traditional components to be fitted in. At the end of the assignment, the students are expected to deliver technical drawings to the client.

The team had a site visit on the 15th of October, where the client gave a tour and explained the background of the mill as well as the project. Some pictures are found at the right of this page.
