Abstract

OTEC workshop

Discover the Ocean’s Power and establish the OTEC foundation!

Solar energy absorbed by the oceans provides a vast, renewable and baseload (24/7) energy source. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) harnesses the ocean’s power and provides not only baseload electricity, but synergistic products like food and fresh water too. OTEC has the potential to become one of the leading renewable energy solutions in the near future.

A new, global initiative aims to raise awareness for OTEC and give it a vibrant impulse: the OTEC foundation! Being a non-profit organization, the OTEC foundation wants to improve information supply and stimulate knowledge transfer on OTEC and related technologies and will do that through providing an online portal, an active network, a knowledge base and more.

We invite you to be part of a team of dedicated OTEC experts and scientists, and take on the challenge to develop the information source for OTEC. You will be given access to a rich network of energy experts, international exposure and much more!

Are you interested in OTEC and excited to help establish the OTEC foundation?! Please send us an e-mail via info@otecfoundation.org and make sure to join us with the OTEC foundation workshop & kick-off!

What: OTEC foundation workshop. Drinks and snacks are included!

When: Friday March 30th, starting at 4 PM till 6 PM

Lunchlecture: "Energy Futures"

Date and time:
Thursday March 29th, 12:45-13:45

Venue
Room F-105, Faculty of TNW

Free lunch!

Prof. Dr. Gert-Jan Kramer
Professor of Sustainable Energy, CML, Leiden University

Abstract

This lecture will be an exploration of how the world might overhaul its energy system between now and mid-century. This talk will be in part based on the Shell Energy Scenarios and in part on research by the author into on the pace of change in energy technology. Having been exposed for more than a decade to much good thinking on “the energy transition”, I have come out with the understanding that the most interesting stories are those that strike a subtle balance between optimism and pessimism: there is an awful lot that mankind can (technically) achieve if we set our minds to it. There is no reason to believe that we should be technically incapable of fixing the energy/climate problem by 2050. However… if we will do it remains to be seen, as the task is daunting and the incentives to make it happen are often lacking. As the Chinese curse says: “May you live in interesting times.”

Lecture by Roland Berger - Clean Economy, Living Planet

Date and time:
Wednesday March 7th, 18:00-20:00

Venue
Faculty of TPM, Room I

Ward van den Berg is a Senior Research Associate. After his PhD in economics at the Erasmus university he started working at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants in 2007. Beside project work, Ward is responsible for research in renewable energy and utilities.

Roland Berger investigated the rationale and potential for challenges of building a strong Dutch industry in Clean Energy Technology in a global context. Already in 2009, we ranked countries based on their national total value added in Clean Energy Technology weighted by real GDP. Based on that, we set the objective that the Netherlands should strive for at least a top-10 position in the Clean Energy Technology industry in 2015. To realize this objective, The Netherlands should focus on a few segments in Clean Energy Technology. In 2011, Roland Berger reevaluated the global data and compared the current status of the Dutch and other countries. High performing countries give lessons on how to improve performance of the industry.
